Sorcery is the ninth album for Jim Jupp, aka Belbury Poly. It grew from Jupp’s love of early to mid-80s electronic music and a rediscovery of how that music had soundtracked his childhood love of all things sci-fi and fantasy. It’s moody and melodramatic electronica rendered in bright and evocative 80s sounds. The not quite 80s tunes have Belbury Poly’s trademark earworm melodies. Jupp returns to a simple line up for this album - it's a very electronic sound with fretless bass, guitars and e-bow provided by regular Belbury Poly collaborator, Christopher Budd.
"Sorcery serves up the fresh sound of now and then. Unmissable."
Electronic Sound
"...the project's sound palette has been updated to embrace a newly digitised '8os, while the visual cues, as seen on the album's sleeve, embrace the fantastical visions of sci-fi book covers. The referentiality rarely gets in the way of Jupp's knack for melody, "
UNCUT
"The music here is more action-inclined than contemplative, cinematic and twitchy rather than ghostly. Sorcery still has plenty of eeriness to offer... There's something special about a beloved act reinventing their sound."
